Wine bars
In recent years, wine bars have begun to infiltrate the social scene. They offer a stark contrast to the usual bars and clubs in the Philippines that blast the latest heart-pumping tunes and lay out ice-filled buckets to the mostly beer-drinking locals. Instead, wine bars have an understated touch of class with their sparkling glasses and well-versed sommeliers ready to assist with requests and queries.
Listed below are a few of the wine bars that offer an excellent selection of wines as well as a great overall wine experience.
Cave Werdenberg in Makati has cozy interiors and a wide selection of wines. Elegant European decor and tables made of oak barrels set the scene for an evening of palate-pleasing Argentinian Cabernet Sauvignons and Italian Spumantes, just to name a few.
Cav at Bonifacio High Street is a wine bar, restaurant and gift shop in one. Guests can choose from a broad spectrum of fine wines from all over the world to bring out or to enjoy there. They also have red and white wine flights providing three tastes of their featured wines. The restaurant’s menu items were selected with the aim to bring out the best characteristics of the wine.
Barcino prides itself in bringing an authentic Spanish wine and tapas bar experience to Filipinos. Wine-sippers can order a bottle of their favourite rich Spanish red while munching on a platter of cheese and chorizo. The bar is quickly becoming popular among bars and clubs in the Philippines and now has a handful of branches around the Metro.
Masseto’s unassuming outside appearance belies an impressive selection of over 250 wines from 20 different regions, many of which are displayed all along the restaurant’s walls. Even though this quaint fine dining restaurant is tucked away on one of Makati’s side streets, the wine choices and meticulously prepared dishes draw in a variety of guests, from couples looking for a quiet night out to Manila’s elite.
Titania Wine Bar was one of the earlier wine suppliers to open in Manila and is recognized in the industry as having one of the most diverse wine selections in the country, catering to tastes and budgets all across the board. The menu highlights French cuisine which perfectly sets of the tones and aromas of the various wines. There are now a number of branches and stores sprinkled all over Manila.
With more of these places available in more areas around Manila, wine has become more available, not just to those who are familiar with their Merlots and Pinot Grigios, but also to those who would like to go out and experience something new. If some of the places above seem a bit pricey there is always the wine stalwart, Barcino's where you can get wine at nearly any budget in a relaxing, impressive atmosphere. I also recommend Terry's Selection, known primarily for its deli and food but Segundo Piso in Pasong Tamo Extension does have an impressive array of reasonably priced wine if you are looking for something different.
Salud!
