Our very own beer!
Beer
Beer is one of the most common alcoholic beverages in the Philippines, consumed by Filipinos all throughout the country. From high-end clubs to local bars to sidewalk drinking sessions, beer has become the Filipinos’ drink of choice for just about any occasion.
Two leading companies provide the supply of local beer in the country – San Miguel Corporation and Asia Brewery. San Miguel Corporation makes the famous San Miguel Pale Pilsen, a favorite of beer veterans because of its strong taste. Other varieties in the beer line-up of San Miguel are San Mig Light, Strong Ice, Super Dry, Premium All-Malt, Cerveza Negra, Red Horse, and Gold Eagle. San Mig Light owes it popularity to its light quality, claiming to have less than 130 calories per bottle. Red Horse, on the other hand, is known for its potency, making it a popular choice among those who want to get the most bang for their buck.
Asia Brewery has a smaller selection of beer. Beer na Beer is their most popular variety and their version of pale pilsen. They also make Colt 45, their premium strong beer marketed for “real men” with an alcohol content of 7.2%. Their light beer is named Manila Beer, boasting less than 110 calories per bottle, rivaling San Miguel’s San Mig Light. They also have Coors Light, which is another variety of their light beer.
Most restaurants, bars and clubs in Metro Manila carry almost all varieties of local beer in their beverages list at different prices. Local beer can be ordered either by bottle or as a bucket of 5 or 6, depending on the place and their existing promos. Famous drinking spots that serve local beer include Dencio’s, Gerry’s Grill, Bugsy’s, and Grilla. Supermarkets and convenience stores like 7-11, Mini Stop, and those at gas stations also stock up and sell local beer.
Bars around Metro Manila also offer imported beer in their beverages list alongside the local brands. Popular beer brands like Hoegaarden, Paulaner, Corona, Budweiser, and Heineken are readily available in most bars. Places like Borough, Draft Gastropub, Beers Paradise, The Distillery, and Dillinger’s 1903 have a wide range of imported beer available in either draft or in bottles. Most imported beers are sold at P100 and up.
Over the past decade, there has been a rise in the consumption of alcoholic beverages in the Philippines, with the most significant rise occurring in the beer industry. In 2008, an article by Tessa Salazar in the Philippine Daily Inquirer talked about the Filipinos’ love for beer, stating that in 2004, a Kirin Research Institute study ranked the Philippines 5th in the highest beer consumption in Asia with each
Filipino consuming an average of 20 liters of beer in a year.
Owing this growth to increased consumption of beer and its assimilation into the Filipino culture, beer has definitely become an indispensable part of any Filipino gathering.
