Global Beer Exchange - Paseo De Magallanes
Ah, Magallanes Center, how you have changed. I still remember the huge supermarket and Coronados Bowling and billiards back in the late 90s. Not much to do back then but today it is home to Global Beer Exchange, a cozy joint that focuses on Craft Beer.
What is Craft Beer? Beer made in a microbrewery is the Wikipedia definition. Simply a craft beer is a beer not made by the big boys like Budweiser, San Miguel, Asia Brewery and the like and therefore is not produced in large volumes. So craft beer is beer made by small breweries in small numbers. So what is so special about it?
Mass manufactured beer is made to appeal to the masses. Craft beer is made to suit a particular group, the creators are free to create their own beer catering to select groups that appreciate different qualities in their beer.
Global Beer Exchange boasts quite a selection of craft beer from around the world and the closest thing to it is Beers Paradise with their 100 beer from around the world over at Polaris Street. Draft, has your foreign draft beer like Hoegarden, Stella Artois and Beck. Global Beer Exchange is always packed with what seem to be yuppies unwinding in Magallanes, the traditional staging point before a journey down South Super Highway. This is beer appreciator heaven! Beer ranges from a somewhat reasonable Gordon Biesch Blonde Bock (alc: 7%) for P135 to well beer that can cost as much as a bottle of scotch. Each beer comes in its own glass that I imagine was designed to enrich the custom experience aesthetically and by design to allow the perfect pouring and aeration to maximize the inherent qualities of each brew. There are both takeaway and dine in prices so you can have a craft beer party as home if you feel like it. I like this place, its a great place to relax with a small group of friends and is cozy enough that you will make new ones, I got there and sat with a group of friends I hadn't met yet.
What I noticed is a lot of people order the Katipunan Craft Ale which at P200 is not the cheapest thing on the menu, talk about a homegrown success. Long tables and benches give Global Beer Exchange a great Oktoberfest vibe and the place lends itself well to small, intimate parties. If this place ever gets full I recommend Kublai's Rock next door.
