More cheap scotch
Based on my wonderful experience with Sir Edwards Scotch I decided to go back to Ralph's to get another bottle. The thing is, with the Sin Tax in place and shooting the price up by 50%, I felt like I should have hoarded the stuff last year and hidden it somewhere Prohibition style. Alas I didn’t think of it back then unlike some clever people I know who bought enough booze and cigarettes to open a sari sari store. Anyhow although at a higher price there are still a few bargains to be had.
Last week I bought two blended scotch whiskies, try as I might you really cannot get a single malt for less than two thousand pesos and believe me I’ve tried. I am not so much of a single malt drinker, somehow I never developed the taste for it no matter how many trips to Kiplings at the Mandarin I’ve had. Matter of fact I only go there because it is the only gentleman’s type club I can think of. Where one can be served scotch properly by comely ladies in long black dresses and slits so high that they would make a blind man see who bringing scotch with water in proper scotch glasses and pouring it for you at every shot. Just to show you I am a man of extremes, the true purpose of my article is to talk about good sub 1k blended scotch but I also speak of Kipling’s which will run you a minimum of 5k for an entry level single malt.
The Glen Bervie was 600 pesos, I saw it in Ralph’s liquor store as I was searching for Sir Edward’s (red cap) but priced at 595 made me want to try Glen Bervie for a change, I would have gotten both if not for having bought the BenMore (name ripoff Glenmore?) a few days ago for 390 in Rustans, it is also available in Ralph’s but for P430. I haven’t tried either yet so stay tuned.
Price is not a factor in what makes scotch good. You have to remember that the giant that is the owner of Johnnie Walker spends millions in advertising, after all, formula one sponsorship doesn’t come cheap. These smaller independent scotch houses might have something really good to offer such as Sir Edward’s. Stay tuned!

Sir edward's finest scotch whiskey
Yes that is a baby high chair in the background.
Everyone knows that Scotch is Whiskey but not all Whiskey is Scotch. Naturally to be "Scotch" you must be from Scotland and that is where Sir Edward's Rare Blend Scotch Whiskey is from.
I chanced upon good old Sir Edward's during a wine run in Ralph's liquor. Ralph's is distinguished from most of the alcoholic beverage importers and distributors because they deal primarily in liquor and not wines. Anyway, Sir Edward’s was there with his friends, Johnnie Walker, J & B and Chivas Regal whiskies. Sir Edward is a blended Scotch whisky with what looks like a stern kilt rocking Scottish warrior. At the sight of such manliness I asked the attendant how Sir Edward stacked up against Sir Johnnie and he said Johnnie is much better. However Sir Edward’s was nearly 1/3 the price (I bought this before the Sin Tax implementation) so it cost, believe it or not P395 pesos! (Update: February 18, 2013, I checked Ralph's yesterday and it is now P595 du'oh!!!! This is explained by the SIN Tax kicking in I think) I had intended Sir Edward’s to be fodder for my strong drinking friends when they visit me, after all, hosting is not cheap and I figured when you have drunk a little everything becomes good.
Shockingly enough, I did not serve Sir Edward’s right away, but when I did boy did I like it. Scotch drinkers have different tastes, but not bad! As a matter of fact, very good! I was quite pleased with it and that is not even factoring the price. Very recently I have had Johnnie Black and Platinum, Mc Callans and have enjoyed this immensely. It is very smooth, aromatic and my friend who I shared the bottle with himself exclaimed that it was very good and he is a professed single malt drinker.
I personally find single malts a hit or miss, after all blending allows you to create the characteristics and notes you want consistently while single malt is what it is. Sir Edward’s is refined, smooth and has a great woody taste. I find that other Scotch such as J & B pale in comparison to this and again that is not counting the price point. See for yourself, drop me a line if the price has changed. Stay tuned for more drink recommendations.
