Don papa rum
Don Papa Rum is named after “The Don” an unsung hero of the Philippine revolution “Dionisio Magbuelas” who was a “healer, shaman, seer, rebel, and leader of a group of babaylanes” who played a key role in the Philippine Revolution. I’m not sure Don Papa would have had the time to make rum considering how busy he was but I suppose its always a cool thing to have alcohol named after you.
What it is: Don Papa is aged Rum from Negros Occidental, where most of our sugar is from. According to their website, it is first aged 7 years in oak barrels in the foothills of Mount Kanlaon before being blended to perfection. Oddly, another page said it was created in 2011 and finished or ready for consumption in 2012, I suppose I could be confused but that would say one year of ageing.
I didn’t see what proof this rum is or what not. But I am a whiskey and beer drinker mostly and I truly enjoyed it. Don Papa Rum is very smooth and unlike some other rums it is indeed very fine when shot straight which I did. Several times.
Although contrary to what Don Papa fought for, after a few shots or straight Don Papa rum, I felt like relaxing on the deck of a house overlooking a vast sugar producing hacienda or getting on a huge white horse and galloping around saying “muy vien” to my plantation workers who are happily gathering more sugar cane for my next batch of rum while stroking my handlebar moustache. There is something about rum or any brown colored liquor that just makes me feel quite manly.
It feels heavier than Tanduay, it does have several flavors but what is most dominant is Vanilla. I won’t go into bouquet and what not as my palate is not very sensitive but I will say that Don Papa is a must try. Look for it in high end supermarkets and according to their website “Don Papa Rum is available at leading bars, clubs and liquor stores in the Metro Manila area.”
On a last note, I had a heavy hangover the next day but that is probably because I was with two good friends drinking a bottle of “Gentleman’s Jack” which we did not drink like gentlemen. It was when the Jack was gone that we saw Don Papa staring at us from the bar top laughing at us and daring us to try him. Lets say three guys were late to work the next day.
